f:id:mythink:20200628172055j:plain

f:id:mythink:20200628175549j:plain

〈 English Version 〉

Title Thinking philosophically about Lars von Trier's film "Antichrist ( 2018 )"〈 1 〉

1. Thing that Trier is trying to describe

a. What was the thing that Trier trying to describe in this film ? Was it to describe the abnormality of the killer Jack with such ruthlessness that it would cause the audience to hate him, or was it to give us a glimpse of the infernal world via The Divine Comedy, with Jack and Verge as incarnations of Dante and Vergilius ? Whichever way of looking at it, there is one thing that is missed in the public's perception of House Jack Built. It's the philosophy or aesthetics of Trier's films, and that's what we're going to think here. It's worth thinking about because no one else is willing to think about it. Only that would be a sufficient apolaustic reason to think philosophically.

b. The overlooked point ・・・・・ is none other than the very "philosophical principle" in his films. Without it, his films can only be understood in a limited way, either subjected to inexplicable and simple physiological rejection, or defended with blind artistic adoration. It would be impossible to confront his films without distancing oneself from such ease and formulating a philosophical interpretation whenever possible. Trier's films, like those of Bergman and Tarkovsky, whom he admires, have "something that inspires the audience to think philosophically". In this sense, his films are not just entertainment, but belong to the lineage of cinema as an art form that has been made famous by great filmmakers. To give a superficial and simplistic impression of his films would only reveal that you have not watched any of his films ( you have only seen them ).

c. When "House Jack Built" is introduced to the public, it inevitably focuses on the bizarre nature of the killer Jack. As a result, there are some curious stories about who the actual model of Jack might be. But whoever it was, how meaningful could it be? Such things are trivial compared to his philosophy, which is revealed in the latter half of the film. His own philosophy, which is not mentioned much in the film, is the heart of the film.

2. From Grapes to Architecture, and to Idol …

a. In the latter half of the film, Jack ( Matt Dillon ), in a dialogue with  Verge ( Bruno Ganz ), tries to explain the decomposition process of human corpses by bringing up the three phenomena of grape rot used in dessert wine ( Scene 1~2 ). Ice wine using frosting, straw wine using drying, and noble rot wine using mold are made from grapes that have been processed through artificial rot. Here, Trier argues, is rot that is artificially used to elevate the grape to an art form. And, he adds, the decomposition of a corpse is a similar art ( scene 3 ).

b. Verge that not agree to Jack's "theory of decay" asks Jack who dreams of building his own house "What about your house? "( Scene 6 ). In other words, "you argue for theory of decay, but in reality you are trying to build a house, you are doing something different". And then Verge adds the common sense question, "You didn't build it to break it down" ( Scene 8 ).

c. However, Jack easily dismisses the common sense of the Verge. In other words, he says that he is building in order to destroy. He goes so far as to say that destruction and ruin are the value of art. ( 10~11 ). Here, in addition to the "theory of decay" mentioned earlier, "theory of destruction" emerges.

d. Furthermore, Albert Speer, an architect active in the Third Reich under Hitler's regime ( second from the left in Scene 12 ), is suddenly referred to here. His ideal was to create buildings that, like ancient ruins, would retain their former beauty even after a thousand years ("The Theory of the Value of Ruins"). However, the astute reader will notice the source of Trier's idea that it was not Jacques' dream of building a house that led him to Albert Speer, but Speer's existence that gave Jack the attributes of an architect. Let's consider the following three points: "Theory of Decay", "Theory of Destruction", and "Theory of Ruin's value".

e. Trier goes toward "Idol" following the Three theories "Theory of Decay, Theory of Destruction, Theory of Value of Ruins".
